We currently offer the following trainings:
- Empathizing Historical Trauma: This interactive training explores the deep and lasting impact of historical trauma and its connection to modern systems, relationships, and professional practices. Designed for educators, service providers, and community professionals, the session examines how implicit bias and anti-Blackness are shaped by colonialism, hegemony, and weaponized education. Participants will engage with frameworks such as Anti-Racist Attachment Theory to better understand the power dynamics and relational ruptures that exist between Westernized institutions and BIPOC communities. Through guided reflection, interactive activities, and discussion, professionals will learn to recognize how historical and systemic inequities influence their daily interactions and decision-making. The training concludes with actionable strategies to decolonize professional practices, challenge pathologizing narratives, and foster authentic empathy, cultural humility, and healing-centered engagement in their work with individuals, families, and communities.
- Rooted in Strength: Empowering Black Youth in the Juvenile Justice System: This dynamic training is designed to empower Black youth who have been impacted by or are at risk of entering the juvenile justice system. Through interactive discussions and activities, participants will explore the systemic issues and disparities that shape their experiences while gaining the tools to advocate for themselves and their peers. The training focuses on building self-advocacy, resilience, and leadership skills, helping youth understand their rights, available resources, and the importance of making healthy, informed decisions. Rooted in trauma-informed and culturally affirming approaches, the program encourages healing through cultural pride, identity development, and connection to community. Participants will also learn to navigate relationships with family members, peers, and authority figures in respectful and confident ways, while developing healthy boundaries in digital spaces, including social media, texting, and cell phone use. Ultimately, this training promotes positive, pro-social pathways for success beyond the system, equipping youth with the mindset and skills to lead, thrive, and build stronger futures.
- L.E.T.S. Save Lives: Roots of Resilience has partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to provide this training. “L.E.T.S. Save Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for Black and African American Communities is a presentation created in concert with an Advisory Committee of experts in Black and African American mental health and suicide prevention, designed to reduce cultural stigma, foster conversations about mental health, and raise awareness of suicide prevention for individuals who identify as Black or African American. While the program is designed for Black and African American audiences, it is open to anyone (18+) who wishes to attend. The program is grounded in research and delivered by trained presenters who identify as having lived experience within Black and African American Communities. Participants will:
- Learn the scope of suicide among the Black and African American population.
- Understand the racial and systemic factors that impact suicide in the Black and African American communities.
- Identify suicide risk and protective factors for Black and African American communities.
- Recognize warning signs of suicide.
- Gain confidence in talking to someone in suicidal distress.
- Learn how to connect someone with help.
Participants will receive education on mental health and suicide prevention through activity-based learning, and take-home materials to use if needed in the future. The goal of this new program is to create conversations in Black communities around mental health and encourage help-seeking to prevent suicide and suicide attempts”.
Trainings Coming Soon:
- National Training and Development Curriculum for Foster and Adoptive Families: This training provides concrete information on the roles and responsibilities of parents who foster and/or adopt (kinship included) as well as the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need in order to effectively parent children who have experienced trauma, separation, and loss.
- Effective Black Parenting Program: Effective Black Parenting Program (EBPP) is a group-based parent skills training program designed to serve Black and African American families. EBPP aims to promote family pride and cohesion and to help families cope with the negative effects of racism. In the first session, instructors introduce a framework called the Pyramid of Success for Black Children to help parents set goals for their children and identify what their children need to reach those goals. The remaining sessions teach parenting skills and educate parents on how children learn and develop. Skills taught include setting family rules, using positive consequences to reward respectful and desirable child behavior, and using corrective consequences to address disrespectful and undesirable child behavior. The program also addresses the topics of drug use, single parenting, and child abuse. After each session, parents are provided with home activities to practice the skills taught during the session.
